Johannesburg will on Wednesday see four sod-turning
ceremonies for low-cost housing projects in and
near the inner city, mayor Herman
Mashaba’s office said.
Mashaba will attend the launch of the sites at 88
Marshall Street in downtown Johannesburg, at South and Joe Slovo Streets in
Yeoville, and a fourth in Vrededorp, his media director Andile Ndlovu told ANA.
The projects are the
first of 84 planned low-cost housing developments
in central Johannesburg that will ultimately house some 6,500 people, according
to the mayor.
“The inner-city revitalisation project is
expected to yield approximately 6 500 units of affordable quality housing with
rentals beginning from R900 per month.
“These properties represent part of a
R22-billion investment in the inner-city which is expected to generate 11 000
direct construction sector
jobs, at a time when the economy is struggling to generate employment for our
residents.”
Mashaba said he looked forward to launching more sites and turning the inner city into a construction site. https://www.engineeringnews.co.za/article/mashaba-to-launch-four-low-cost-housing-sites-in-johannesburg-2019-08-20-1/rep_id:4136
