Trade agreements in the spotlight at Export Week

South Africa’s increasing international presence has led to several trade agreements being negotiated with other countries. Facilitating the growth of the country’s export markets, these favourable agreements have opened up countless opportunities for companies based here to increase their international trade.

“Exporting is crucial to the country’s economic health. An increase in exports mean growth in business, and a growth in business means bigger profits for local companies — all of which ultimately results in more jobs for local workers.  Yet only a small percentage of potential exporters take advantage of these opportunities. It is critical for more local businesses to think globally.  This is according to Trade Invest KwaZulu-Natal’s Executive Manager for Export Development and Promotion, Mr Lester Bouah.

Says Bouah: “The decision to export needs to be based on careful analysis and sound planning. Any company considering exporting must understand that doing business internationally is not a simple task. It is stimulating and potentially profitable in the long-term but requires much preparation and research prior to the first transaction.”

Case studies of companies that benefited from a trade agreement will be delivered and presented at the upcoming Export Week KZN Summit in Durban taking place 17-21 October.  Bouah, a speaker at the event, continues saying that it is essential for emerging exporters, existing exporters and seasoned exporters to be in Durban in October to network and learn from each other.

The event hosts some of the top business minds who will share their tips and stories on how to build a global business, including the following:

    • Frances Chisholm, US Consul General in Durban
    • Hamish Erskine, Chief Executive Officer, Dube TradePort (DTP)
    • Zamo Gwala, Chief Executive Officer, Trade & Investment KwaZulu-Natal
    • Desmond Golding, Head of Department, Economic Development Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA)
    • Yayeri Kisaame, Chief Executive Officer, Southern African Shippers Transport and Logistics Council (SASTALC)
    • Wang Jianzhou, Chinese Consul General in KwaZulu-Natal
