CEMEX to supply cement to major Egyptian infrastructure projects

Mexico-based building materials multinational, CEMEX, is to supply around 0.76 million t of cement, as well as 0.5 million m3 of concrete, for infrastructure works related to the Suez Canal in Egypt.

The projects involve the construction of tunnels to connect Egypt’s mainland to the Sinai Peninsula, as well as the development of a commercial seaport.

CEMEX will supply 0.16 million t of cement and 0.35 million m3 of concrete for the construction of two tunnels under the Suez Canal that will link Port Said in northeast Egypt to the Sinai Peninsula. CEMEX is supplying the cement and concrete through a joint venture with Orascom Construction and The Arab Contractors.

The construction of the 4 km tunnels has required the installation of three ready-mixed batch plants onsite to fulfill the projects concrete demands.

The project forms part of the Egyptian government’s plant to develop the Sinai region by improving accessibility. Past access to the peninsula has been through a single tunnel, which has slowed development.

The company is to supply 0.6 million t of cement and 0.132 million m3 of concrete for the development of the commercial East Said seaport.

According to the company’s website, CEMEX operates through Assiut Cement Co. in Egypt. Located 400 km south of Cairo, Assiut Cement operates a three-line cement plant with capacity of 5.7 million tpy.
